Cooking Channel Debut Appearance
Watch me, Dr. Howard Conyers, June 20, 2016 at 9pm EST (8pm CST) as I appear on Cooking Channel's Man Fire Food. I will be pit-cooking South Carolina whole hog BBQ, just like my father learned and last done in the 1970s before using above ground pits. If you love barbecue, and the history of barbecue in America, you will love this episode. If you'd like to emulate this style of pit-cooking after watching the show, please give me a shout for a personalized or group training session.
Since I was raised in a community where this has been an ongoing technique since my ancestors' enslavement, it is my responsibility to carry this tradition forward so America can see who perfected this craft before the era of modern, above-ground pits and smokers. I continue this tradition out of love and respect for the legends who were always being named while I was growing up learning this art.

This will be my first time being featured on national TV and prayerfully not the last. I want to thank my wife Kathryn, my family, my friends, and the many supporters that I met on the journey from Home Branch (outside of Manning, SC) to New Orleans, LA. This opportunity is a continuation of lectures, demonstrations, and food events I do, in which I have taken on perpetuating this tradition, all while maintaining my work as a full-time engineer.
This work is not just about me, it is about the many invisible black barbecue cooks and farmers, just like my father Harrison, who've come before me to lay my foundation and keep me grounded. My father's dedication was only half of it. My father and mother Hallie, placed a strong emphasis on getting an education, which allowed me to flourish in the other side of my work as a NASA engineer.
Again tune in, to Cooking Channel’s Man Fire Food at 9pm EST (8pm CST) and please share with your friends and family, as it is not everyday that a pitmaster with an eye to his roots and a love of authentic cuisine, makes it to a national platform. I am grateful to represent you, my family, and my community. I am here because the sacrifice of many.
